My Song Is Love Unknown is a wonderful sacred work, set for a solo quartet of singers and SATB choir, and is based on John Ireland’s well-loved hymn-tune Love Unknown. Alexander L’Estrange expertly takes fragments of Ireland’s melody, developing, interweaving and re-harmonising them to create a powerful, ethereal sound-world that perfectly reflects the poem’s themes of love, sorrow, passion, death and ecstasy.
